Overview:

Arranging music can be a challenging yet rewarding task, especially when it comes to a cappella music. As a member of the Spartan Dischords A cappella Group, I had the privilege of arranging several songs for our performances. To do so, I used a music notation software called Musescore, which allowed me to customize my arrangements with nuanced notations and share them with other groups online. In this portfolio piece, I'll discuss my experience arranging music with Musescore, the tools I used, and the impact it had on my musical journey.

Why I began arranging:

As a member of the Spartan Dischords A cappella Group, I had the opportunity to expand my musical knowledge and skills, often delving into music theory and developing intricate musical arrangements. During this time, I arranged several songs on my own for the group to perform.

Tools used:

  • Finale, a music notation software that was industry standard but proved to be incredibly pricey for a young college student

  • Musescore, a free software with a robust community and plenty of online support

Impact:

  • Several of my arrangements were performed by the Spartan Dischords A cappella Group

  • Shared many arrangements with other groups, on the Musescore website, and on YouTube

  • Pursued a hobby and passion for arranging music and often use Musescore to write and arrangement own original music

  • Overall, my experience arranging music with Musescore allowed me to explore my creativity and musical talents while also helping me to save money on expensive software. Through this experience, I was able to expand my musical knowledge and skills, create unique arrangements for a cappella groups, and pursue a hobby and passion for arranging music.
